FAQs

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

We accept volunteers who are in, or have completed, grades 1 t0 12. A parent or guardian must accompany any youth from grades 1-12. Youth in grades 7-12 may come with a group at a 1:5 ratio of adult chaperones (21 years +) to youth, and a signed Youth Permission form.

Is the a specific time commitment?

It is up to you to decide how often you would like to volunteer. You can volunteer once, once a week, once a month, even once a year. We are flexible and try to accommodate everyone’s schedule.

Can I show up to volunteer anytime?

Please contact us in advance to schedule your volunteer time(s). We work to maintain a balanced schedule, ensuring we don’t have too many volunteers one day and not enough the next.

Can I volunteer if I don’t share the beliefs of Siloam Mission?

Our volunteers come form varying faith and cultural backgrounds. We simply ask that you agree to respect and not detract from our Statement of Beliefs while volunteering with us.

How will I know what to do when I volunteer?

We are sensitive about volunteering, especially for first-timers. Siloam Mission staff is always there to give you direction and help you learn about the way we operate.

Is it normal to feel nervous about volunteering at Siloam Mission?

At first, many of our volunteers feel nervous about coming to Winnipeg’s inner city and to Siloam Mission. We have taken steps to help create a safe environment. We have our own parking lot on the south side of our building, equipped with flood lights and video surveillance. Siloam Mission staff is always present; you will not be left to figure things out on your own. Although the circumstances our patrons face each day are very serious, we create a fun and friendly atmosphere and our patrons will feel like family in no time.
