Winnipeg, Manitoba (January 20, 2011) – With the bitter cold gripping Winnipeg, two local business owners say the city’s disadvantaged should not have to go without warm clothes this winter.

That’s why Bob and Rob Cunningham from Cunningham Business Interiors at 1340 Sargent St. are donating 900 jackets to Siloam Mission this Friday, January 21, 2011.

The donation is one of the largest jacket donations Siloam has ever received.

“Nobody should have to freeze in Winnipeg, especially not the most vulnerable,” say Bob and Rob.

“Having a low income shouldn’t keep somebody from accessing basic necessities like warm clothes. It’s simply not right that economic disadvantages can hinder someone from staying warm.”

The Cunninghams purchased 1250 jackets in a sister company. They had already sold 350 when the cold snap descended on Winnipeg earlier this week.

“We heard on the news that Siloam was looking for donations of warm clothes to meet the needs of their guests,” says Bob.

“If these jackets can help someone dealing with the hardships of life on the streets, then that’s a helping hand we’re happy to extend!”

In line with the 30% increase in services provided over the last year, Siloam Mission has been handing out more sweaters, jackets, toques, mitts and long underwear than usual.

“We’ve seen an increase in the number of people that rely on Siloam, and we’ve also seen more people come through our drop-in centre this week alone,” says Siloam Mission’s executive director Floyd Perras.

“Seeing local businesses come alongside those experiencing homelessness or poverty is always encouraging, but even more so during this time. Winter is always the toughest time of the year to be using a shelter.  Receiving a brand new, warm jacket can spark hope. It’s a reminder that someone cares.”

EDITORS, PLEASE NOTE: The Cunninghams will hand over the jackets to Siloam Mission tomorrow, Friday, January 21, 2011 at 10 a.m. at their store on 1340 Sargent Avenue. Bob and Rob Cunningham along with Floyd Perras will be on hand and available for media interviews.
