Siloam Mission Critically Low On Food
Winnipeg, Manitoba (November 25, 2010) – Siloam Mission is desperately seeking food donations to meet the increasing need of the growing homeless population in Winnipeg.
This month alone, Siloam has served more than 28,050 meals — that’s an increase of 7,280 from the same time last year. By the end of this month, Siloam will have served 30,000 more meals than last year.
“We recently expanded our hours of operation to offer services every hour of the day, every day of the year. The expansion means we’re serving more meals, but we’re also seeing a rise in the number of people that use our services,” Floyd Perras, executive director of Siloam Mission says.
“The housing crisis in Winnipeg is growing – it’s getting harder and harder to find dry, safe, affordable housing. That means many people are forced to choose whether to spend their earnings on shelter or food. Both are basic human needs, but it’s getting tougher for low-income people to access both.”
Siloam’s most pressing, immediate needs are: fresh vegetables, milk, meat (beef, pork, chicken), sugar, sliced bread and coffee. To see a full list of urgent items click here.
“We have always relied on the community to rally around their inner-city neighbours and lend a helping hand,” Perras says.
“We trust that Manitobans will continue to help their less fortunate and see us through, especially in this holiday season when nobody, nobody, should go hungry.”
Siloam has rarely been as low on supplies as the organization is today.
All donations can be dropped of at Siloam Mission’s main building on 300 Princess St.
