At Siloam Mission, every step forward is a shared effort.

Whether it’s preparing a meal, offering basic necessities, or walking alongside someone on their housing journey – it’s people who make the difference.

Last year, we launched Sheltering the Spirit, our 10-year housing strategy with an ambitious goal: to create 700 to 1,000 units of social housing right here in Winnipeg. Thanks to the generous support of donors and partners like you, 73 of those units are already a reality.

But this story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people helping bring these buildings to life – including many who have experienced homelessness themselves.

One way that happens is through Building Futures, Siloam’s supportive employment program. This initiative offers community members who are experiencing homelessness the chance to gain work experience, build confidence, and take steps toward long-term goals.

Participants take on meaningful roles in areas like laundry services, kitchen and dishwashing stations, street cleanup, and increasingly, in construction and maintenance – especially as our supportive housing portfolio grows.

“It’s not just work. It’s about moving forward,” says Bradley Gilbert, Employment Program Coordinator. “We meet people where they’re at, and we walk with them toward their goals.”

For some participants, that means establishing a daily routine. For others, it’s about getting ID, securing housing, re-entering the workforce, or continuing their healing journey. Each goal is personal – and each step forward is supported by dedicated caseworkers and program staff.

From our supportive housing site on Roblin Boulevard – now home to 32 seniors – to the newly completed units in Winnipeg’s West End, Building Futures participants have been hands-on every step of the way – painting, installing flooring, assisting skilled tradespeople, and preparing units for future residents.

“It’s amazing to see the ownership and pride they feel. They walk past the buildings and say, ‘I helped build that,’” says Bradley.

Last year, 55 individuals gained employment through the Building Futures program – each one taking steps toward greater stability and self-determination.

As our housing strategy continues, Building Futures remains at the heart of the work. Your support and partnership bring our vision of a Winnipeg without chronic homelessness closer to reality every day.

Because of you, people are finding opportunities to share their skills and be part of something meaningful. Someone who once experienced homelessness is now helping build housing – and a future – for our community. Thank you for believing in this work. Your support makes it all possible.
