Everyone’s journey from homelessness to housing looks different. At Siloam Mission, we connect people with the services, guidance, and care they need to find stability and hope.

Thanks to support from people like you, we can deliver care that shows up in practical, life-changing ways each day – warm meals, safe shelter, housing support, and vital services that help people begin rebuilding their lives.

Jimmy is one of the people who found that support.

Jimmy had a tough life growing up. He started using substances as a teenager, and as his addiction grew, it strained his relationships with the people he loved. But addiction never changed who Jimmy was at his core.

When his father was diagnosed with cancer, Jimmy stepped up as his primary caregiver. He devoted himself fully to caring for the person he loved most. After his father passed away, Jimmy’s life took a devastating turn. His name wasn’t on the lease of the apartment they had shared – the home where they had spent their final moments together. Jimmy was served an eviction notice.

“I had lost everything that he had left me,” Jimmy says. “I ended up homeless.”

Grief and trauma weighed heavily on him. Life on the streets was harsh and unpredictable, and the pain of his loss felt overwhelming. Substance use became part of how he coped with the cold, the isolation, and the weight of his loss.

Despite everything, Jimmy hadn’t given up on himself. He entered detox twice and was determined to turn things around. He worked with Siloam’s crew, which helps clean the neighbourhood. Still, he felt a need for more purpose and direction in life – until the day he met Mike, Team Lead of Siloam’s Building Futures program.

Mike remembers that first interaction clearly. “He approached me, looked me straight in the eyes, and introduced himself,” he recalls.

Over the next few days, Mike noticed Jimmy’s dedication and strong work ethic. He told him about Building Futures – Siloam’s supportive employment program – and encouraged him to apply. Jimmy applied and was accepted.

From there, things began to change.

Jimmy became part of the team that renovates and maintains Siloam’s supportive housing units, helping turn empty spaces into safe homes for others rebuilding their lives. Some days, he painted walls and ceilings. Other days, he laid flooring. “I missed no day,” Jimmy says. “I did what I had to do.”

At the time, Jimmy was still staying in Siloam’s shelter. Through the program, he worked toward a series of goals, meeting every one of them. His final goal was finding stable housing of his own.

Today, Jimmy has housing of his own. He acknowledges that the journey isn’t over and some days are still hard, but he has built a space of his own, shared with two cats he adopted. His aunt smiles when she talks about how far he has come and the progress he’s made in taking care of himself.

He works as a caretaker in one of Siloam’s supportive housing buildings, helping maintain the space while building relationships and supporting tenants – many of whom have faced challenges similar to his own. His lived experience shapes how he shows up each day, with patience, understanding, and respect.

Looking back, Jimmy reflects on how far he’s come. Healing takes time, and some days are still hard. But he knows now that he isn’t alone.

We are so thankful to our supporters for making life-changing supports possible that help people like Jimmy heal and rebuild.

Jimmy’s story is one of many, and it’s a reminder of what can happen when someone is met with patience, understanding, and the generosity of people like you who choose to support Siloam’s work.

“I’m grateful,” he says, his voice quiet but certain. “I really am. I wouldn’t be here without the people who chose to care.”
