Joint Statement on Proposed Dismantling of Winnipeg Bus Shelters by City Council

Siloam Mission does not support the motion by councilor Shawn Nason and the IRPW committee to remove infrastructure from bus stops on Regent Avenue, or anywhere else.

Dismantling bus shelters is a punitive action and does not address the lack of adequate housing and safe consumption sites which leads to people seeking shelter and using substances in public places. The only solution to homelessness is housing; and housing is a human right.

Together with our partners in the sector, we are calling on Winnipeg’s City Council to abandon this regressive motion and instead to commit to strategies that address the root causes of homelessness and public substance use.
