May is a special time for Siloam Mission as we celebrate Leave a Legacy Month, a season to reflect on the deep, lasting impact that thoughtful, long-term gifts can have on the causes closest to our hearts.
For James and Hazel Ridley, that cause is Siloam Mission. Their commitment spans over 13 years and continues to touch countless lives in our community. Their story is one of compassion, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the dignity and potential of every person.
James and Hazel’s connection to Siloam Mission began during their years as teachers in Little Grand Rapids, where they developed close ties with Indigenous communities. “We witnessed firsthand the challenges they faced, especially the long-term impacts of colonization,” James shared.
“It opened our eyes to the kind of support that’s truly needed.”
That understanding sparked a deep desire to help. The Ridleys began supporting Siloam Mission – not only financially, but also through tangible acts of kindness. “We used to bring clothing and other essentials,” Hazel recalled.
Now married for 57 years, James and Hazel have always lived by strong values of giving back. For them, including Siloam Mission in their will was a natural decision. “We both feel like it’s a part of what we want to do to help people,” James said. “We know it’s needed tremendously and wanted to help out in any way that we can.”
Their belief in Siloam Mission’s work runs deep. “We know that beyond just providing a meal Siloam helps in many other ways like housing, employment training, and healthcare,” James said.
“We think it’s so important that people experiencing homelessness have access to these types of resources. And we’re very glad to be able to help.”
Their generosity extends beyond Siloam as well. Hazel is a two-time cancer survivor, and part of their legacy gift will also support cancer care. “We want to give back to places that truly help people through tough times,” she said.
When asked what he hopes their generosity will accomplish, James answered with quiet confidence: “I just know that the people there will make good use of it.”
As we mark Leave a Legacy Month, we celebrate generous individuals like James and Hazel, whose enduring support makes sure Siloam Mission can continue to offer hope, healing, and opportunity to those who need it most. Their story is a testament to the power of giving and an impact that will continue to grow for years to come.
