At just 25, Sophie is already making a lasting mark at Siloam Mission. As a volunteer nurse at Siloam’s Saul Sair Health Centre (SSHC), she brings more than medical training — she brings heart, humility, and a deep sense of purpose.

Her journey of service began in 2019 at Agape Table, where she prepared meals for people experiencing poverty. After gaining clinical experience as a nurse, she felt a growing call to use her skills in a more personal and impactful way. She had heard about Siloam through her nursing studies, applied to volunteer, and hasn’t looked back since.

Sophie is motivated by the belief that homelessness can happen to anyone and that everyone deserves dignity and care. Her weekly shifts at SSHC are fast-paced and varied. She treats wounds, infections, and cold and flu symptoms, checks blood pressure and blood sugar, manages pain, and provides foot care. She also offers a safe, quiet and dignified space where people feel heard.

One moment that stands out for her involved a patient in a walking boot who couldn’t get to a doctor or pharmacy to refill a critical prescription. Sophie stepped in, coordinated with his care provider, and arranged for the medication to be delivered directly to Siloam. The patient told her he didn’t know what he would have done without her. It’s this kind of tangible, immediate impact that keeps her coming back.

Volunteering at Siloam has shown Sophie what it means to meet people exactly where they are. Many of her patients are in survival mode. Cooking, bathing, and managing medications might not be possible every day. She offers practical options that respect each person’s unique situation.

She does not pass judgement and focuses on what’s realistic and sustainable. Treatment plans, she says, only work if they fit into someone’s life. Her approach emphasizes trust and collaboration over rigid protocols.

“Access is such a barrier for people experiencing homelessness,” she says. “The system is complex. Clinics like Siloam’s save lives.”

Sophie is currently studying to become a Nurse Practitioner, and her experience at Siloam has helped shape that direction. She hopes more young people will consider volunteering and encourages anyone interested to take that first step. A shadow shift, she says, can open your eyes to how powerful simple acts of care can be.

In a world that often moves too fast to notice those in need, Sophie chooses to slow down, listen, and serve with love. Her work may not always make headlines, but it transforms lives — one compassionate connection at a time.
